What is a "Doctor of the Church"?
Caption
It's not a medical title. The Church names a Doctor when a saint's teaching has so shaped the faith that the whole Church learns from it. There are only 38 in two thousand years. St. Ephrem, remembered today, earned it writing hymns... he taught doctrine in poetry so ordinary people could sing what they believed. Four women hold the title: Teresa of Ávila, Catherine of Siena, Thérèse of Lisieux, and Hildegard of Bingen.
